SERIES: ‘BUBONICA’
The following artworks were commissioned for the Wom{b}anifesto exhibition and art collective. Using found materials and embroidery, I created three ‘dream’ landscapes that are a response to what I have called ‘Bubonica’, a term to harness current events, the pandemic, socio-economic ills and general apocalyptica that we find ourselves in right now.
THESE WORKS ARE DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF MY CLOSE FRIEND AND FELLOW ARTIST, PHUMLANI PIKOLI.
UNDERNEATH ALL THIS WALKING TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER, INTO ONE ANOTHER, DISSECTING AND CRISS-CROSSING THE SOUTH AFRICAN CITIES STILL SCARRED AND CHOPPED UP, LIKE UGLY, UNSEAMED DOLLS BADLY STITCHED TOGETHER IN 1950.
SLEEP { rest, space, container, mechanism }
EYES { enter point, portal, porthole }
IF YOU TAKE THE MARS ROVER TO ANOTHER WORLD YOU MIGHT MEET YOUR DOUBLE, BUT THAT’S NOT THE POINT HERE; HERE: WE LOOK TO THE MOON, THE WOMB, THE SPACE ALL LIFE GROWS.
